Hoodia is a species of plant that come under the family Apocynaceae. Under Hoodia geneus there are thirteen types of species, one of which is Hoodia gordonii. This class of plant has age old medicinal history when the tribe population in Africa used to eat this plant to suppress their appetite for longer time hunting. Later, South African Government had realized the medicinal usage of this plant thus filling a patent for it in 1996. Present day, eating good and lump some food is getting to be the habit of many people. Secondly, there are several people who are health cautious and try to maintain their diet by eating less thus can able to maintain their look slim and young. In this scenario a drug which has been developed from Hoodia gordonii can help the people to suppress their appetite thus maintaining their daily food practice. Although, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have not yet approve it, there are dieters who are taking this drug as measure to control their diet. There are reports depicting that the compound from this plant which is responsible for the anti-appetite action are not stable in the body as it get degraded in the liver. However, the appetite suppressing effect of the drug was already proved from the age old study. The drugs like alli, xenical and orlistat which are presently available in the market as an anti-appetite drug are showing to have effect on liver thus causing liver injuries. More than 30 cases have been reported in US taking orlistat as an anti-appetite drug which caused serious liver injury to the consumer. Thus in this present scenario natural medicine made using Hoodia gordonii can be a good replacement of the present drug for the dieters.
